Road work cheers turned my sluggish jog into a sprint

I had to change my route because of road work. The crew saw me and started cheering as I went by. It felt great and helped me run harder. Do you get motivated by stuff like that?

Absolutely! That kind of unexpected boost is the best. I had a similar thing happen last fall with a road crew. A couple of guys waved and gave a friendly honk with their truck horn as I was really dragging up a hill. It totally flipped my mood. I got this silly grin and found a whole new gear for the rest of my run. It is amazing how a little human connection can change your whole workout.

That point about a little human connection flipping your mood really hits home. I heard a podcast once where a cyclist talked about farm workers cheering them on during a brutal ride. They said it was like a shot of electricity, turning a suffer-fest into something fun. It stuck with me how much a few seconds of kindness from strangers can change your whole outlook.

Watch those cheers turn into a little private competition. Started wondering if they were timing me between cones. My brain went "don't slow down until you're past the big roller." Felt like I had to prove the hype was right. That shift, from just feeling good to wanting to perform, added a whole other layer. Really makes you push past what you thought was empty.
