But what if these robots are just cleaning up surface trash while most plastic sinks deeper where they can't reach? I read that some models break down in rough seas and become litter themselves. They also need lots of fuel and maintenance, which adds to pollution. So is focusing on tech taking attention away from reducing our plastic use?

Honestly, these cleanup projects feel like a false win that lets companies avoid passing real laws. People see a robot and think the problem's handled, so nothing actually changes.

Let's toss high-tech junk into the sea to fix the junk we already tossed... what could go wrong? These robots probably just skim the top while the real mess sinks out of sight... and when they break down, they add to the plastic soup we're trying to clean. So we get to feel good about 'solving' the problem without actually changing anything.
