New filter saved me $40 on my electric bill last month

Swapped my old MERV 8 for a MERV 5 in my unit in Austin and the airflow is way better now, how low do you guys go on filters?

Running a low MERV in Austin makes sense for that AC strain but you might be letting in more fine dust from all the construction going on around town. Could be worth checking your indoor air quality with a cheap monitor before committing to the switch long term. Sometimes the savings on the bill get eaten up by extra cleaning or allergy meds.

Another angle worth tossing out there - low MERV filters actually let more moisture through in humid climates, and Austin's humidity is no joke. That extra moisture hitting your coil can lead to mold growth over time, which is a whole different headache than dust or allergy bills. Might be worth checking if your system's coil stays dry with a lower MERV before you lock in that change.
