Appreciation post: Granite mortar gave me a rock lesson during spice prep
I was crushing spices with my granite mortar earlier. It clicked that the rock's toughness is why it lasts, unlike softer stones. Anyone find geology popping up in odd places?

Actually, sharpening my kitchen knives on an old sandstone block did that for me. You can feel how the softer rock wears down to sharpen the steel. It made me realize why some rocks are good for tools and others just crumble. My granite countertop has a few tiny chips that show its strength too.
