I gave up on voice assistants in my house. The quiet is nice, but it's the data harvesting that really scared me off.

Isn't it frustrating how much they track us?

I read on Wired that most smart home devices send data back to makers every few minutes. It's not just ads, it's the constant feeling of being watched, like your smart speaker is a tiny spy in your kitchen. They claim it's to make things better for us, but really it's just to sell more stuff. What gets me is how we've all gotten used to our gadgets listening in all the time. I heard about a voice assistant recording a private talk and sending it to someone by mistake. So yeah, it's beyond frustrating, it's downright creepy.

Tell you what kills me, I talked about hiking boots near my phone last week and now every ad is for outdoors gear. Even my map app seems to know when I leave work and suggests routes home before I even type anything. It feels like my own house is watching me sometimes, like the smart speaker is just waiting to catch a keyword. That quiet tracking in the background really does make you feel like you’re never alone.
