Elm Street foundry's upgrade has me missing the old ways
They just put in a fully automated molding line. Back in the day, we did everything by hand and knew every crack in the floor. Does anyone else feel like the trade is losing its hands-on touch?

I saw a documentary once where an old carpenter said something like "the floor talks to you if you stand on it long enough." The part about knowing every crack in the floor made me think of that. It seems like that kind of deep knowledge just gets lost when machines take over. Sure, the new line is probably faster and makes more stuff, but it just feels different. Like the soul of the work is in those hands-on details, and when that goes, it's just another factory job. Maybe it's just me but that connection to the actual craft seems really important.

Yeah, @blake428, that makes so much sense, and you see it everywhere now (even tech feels pretty hollow without that human touch). That loss of connection you're talking about is the exact same thing.
