My kraut always turns out great without any fancy airlocks

Many people say you need special lids to keep air out during fermentation, but I just cover my jar with a cloth and rubber band. I've been doing this for years and never get mold or bad smells. It seems like a simple method works just as well for veggies like carrots and cabbage. What do you think, is spending money on gear really necessary or just hype?

Have you ever tried fermenting in different climates?

Doesn't the humidity totally change how fast things ferment?

Honestly, seeing "never get mold or bad smells" makes me feel so seen. I do the same cloth and rubber band trick for my pickles and it just works. Tbh I think people get sold a lot of gear they don't really need. My grandma fermented in a crock with a plate on top for like sixty years. Simple is often better.
