Rant: I visited a design school and half the class had never used a thimble. We're losing touch with how clothes are really made.

Hear where you're coming from, but let's not panic! Not every sewing task needs a thimble, especially with lighter fabrics. @thompson.holly makes a good point about using them for thick denim to avoid pain and slips. However, in design school, they might focus more on machine sewing or digital patterns now. Hand-sewing skills are still key, but tools change over time. Maybe the class just hasn't hit the heavy-duty hand-stitching unit yet!

My sewing teacher always stressed using a thimble for hand-stitching thick fabrics like denim. It stops needle slips and helps push the needle through without pain. I began with a metal thimble but now prefer silicone for comfort. Are they doing any practical sewing exercises in class?
