Pro tip: A tailor told me to always cut fabric on a single layer, not folded
I was at a shop in Austin last Thursday trying to save yardage on a coat pattern, and she stopped me and said 'stop being cheap, you'll mess up the grain line.' Has anyone else had a sewing pro call them out on something that completely changed their approach?

Yeah I used to fold everything but that makes way more sense actually.

Actually I gotta push back on this one. My grandma taught me to sew 25 years ago and she always folded fabric for cutting. @hugo_craig I get why it works for some people but honestly folding saves time and keeps your fabric from slipping around. If you're careful with your grain line and use a good straight edge you can totally cut folded without messing anything up. Ive made dozens of coats and dresses that way and never had a problem. Plus you can cut both sides at once which is way faster especially if you're on a deadline. I think that tailor was just being fussy about her own method.
