Just had a brake fail on an Otis elevator in a 12 story building downtown
Last Tuesday I was doing a routine inspection on an Otis Gen2 in a office building near 5th and Main. Everything looked fine until I tested the emergency brake and it just didn't grab. The shoes were completely glazed over from some kind of oil contamination. Had to pull the whole machine brake assembly and replace the pads on site. Has anyone else seen this kind of oil seepage on the Gen2 models?

Saw a thread about this on an elevator tech forum a few weeks back. A guy in Chicago had the exact same issue on three Gen2s in one building. Turned out the seal on the motor bearing was weeping oil and it was dripping right onto the brake assembly. He ended up replacing the whole motor on two of them cause the seal couldn't hold. Might be worth checking that bearing seal before you button everything back up.

Gotta say I'm not totally convinced it's that big of a deal. I've seen glazed pads before and sometimes just a good cleaning and adjustment gets them working fine again. Idk, maybe I'm just lucky but I haven't had a seal go bad on one of these yet.
