Why I traded my old VOM for a clamp meter after a 600V scare
Last week I had to check a live feeder panel at a strip mall in Denton, and my old Simpson VOM just felt sketchy. I've used that thing for 15 years, never had an issue, but I needed to grab a current reading without breaking the circuit. A buddy at the supply house kept pushing me toward a clamp meter, said it was safer and faster for exactly this kind of job. First time I clamped those jaws around a 3/0 wire, I could see the load drop in real time without touching a single terminal. Cost me $89 at the counter, but honestly the peace of mind was worth more than the price tag. Now I'm wondering if I should upgrade my lead set too, or is that overkill? Have any of you guys switched over completely and regret it?
