When my friend tried to use speaker wire for a ceiling fan hookup...
I now keep a short piece of proper gauge wire in my truck to show the difference on the spot.

I was at the hardware store last week and saw a guy buying the absolute thinnest wire for a space heater. Your story about the speaker wire totally fits that same mindset. It feels like people are willing to cut corners on the small, boring stuff that keeps things safe, just to save five minutes or three bucks. Then they're shocked when something fails or gets dangerous later. Keeping that sample in your truck is smart because sometimes seeing the real difference is the only way the lesson sticks.

Last winter, a friend's space heater melted its plug from thin wire, scary stuff.

Contrary to what you're saying, that thin wire might be just fine for his needs. He could be using it for a low-wattage heater or a temporary fix. Not every project requires industrial-grade materials. People have been making do with what they have for years without issues. Over-sizing wires is often a waste of money and resources. Assuming everyone is cutting corners ignores real-world constraints like budget.
