Bought a $140 auto taper for a two room job, mixed feelings after day one

Picked up a used auto taper off Craigslist from a retired crew lead in Toledo, figured it'd pay for itself on this 14 board ceiling I'm hanging solo. Ran it through a full coat on the seams and it definitely lays mud faster than my hand taping, but the cleanup ate up all the time I thought I'd gain. Anyone else find these things only worth it on big commercial work, or am I just not dialing in the pressure settings right?

You ever see a guy spend more time cleaning a tool than using it? My buddy borrowed one from his uncle for a basement finish, same deal. He swore the mud went on smooth but then he spent two hours scraping dried chunks out of the hopper with a putty knife. Said the only thing it taped up faster was his patience. I think he sold it after that one job.
