That old surveyor in Dayton taught me more than my CAD class did

I was on a site visit near the river last fall and this guy in his 60s, probably a field surveyor for 40 years, watched me struggle with a boundary calc for 20 minutes. He walked over, pointed at my screen and said 'you are trusting that laser more than you trust the ground.' He showed me how he checks his control points every morning using a simple steel tape and a known monument, not the fancy robotic thing. It stuck with me because I redid my whole workflow after that, and my closure error dropped from 0.08 to under 0.02. Has anyone else had a veteran drafter or surveyor teach you something that made you change your process entirely?
