Hot take: dimension lines should never touch the object, period.

I keep seeing drawings from new drafters where the dimension lines butt right up against the edge of the part. My mentor at Johnson Engineering in Portland drilled it into me to leave at least a 1/8 inch gap so the dimensions don't blend into the geometry. It makes prints way easier to read and cuts down on mistakes on the shop floor. Has anyone else had trouble getting this across to younger guys?

Totally agree, that tiny gap makes all the difference for clean prints.

Amen, that gap is what separates amateurs from pros.
