Began greasing my bearing buddies every 3 trips instead of once a season after a hub almost caught fire on I-5.

I was hauling a trailer full of drafting tables to a client in Portland when I smelled burning rubber. Pulled over and the hub was smoking hot because the grease had basically turned to crust. Took me 3 hours and $80 in parts to fix it at a random shop. Anyone else ever neglect basic maintenance on their work rig and learn the hard way?

Right? I had a wheel bearing seize on me once, taught me to never skip those greasings ever again.

Man that's a rough lesson to learn the hard way. I've had my share of close calls with my own rig and it's amazing how fast things go south when you skip a simple maintenance step. Good on you for catching it before it turned into a full fire though, that could have been way worse. Sounds like you got off lucky with just $80 and a few hours of your time. I started doing my bearing buddies every other trip after a similar scare with my work truck a couple years back, it's just not worth the risk.
