Rant: My dad insisted I buy a $40 torque wrench for my car, and it saved me from a huge mistake.
I was replacing my brake calipers in my garage last month and thought I could just tighten the bolts by feel. He told me to get a specific click-type wrench from Harbor Freight and torque them to 32 foot-pounds. When I did, I found two of the old bolts were already stretched and would have failed. Does anyone else have a story where a simple tool recommendation from someone older turned out to be crucial?

Snapped a ratchet strap last week because I ignored my uncle's tip to check the weight limit first.

My grandpa made me buy a multimeter for my motorcycle.

Ugh, I feel for you @linda_murphy. My dad did the same thing when I got my first bike. Spent a whole weekend making me check every wire and connection until I hated that little meter. Turns out he was right, it saved me a ton of trouble later.
