Water heater drip pan saved my laminate floor in Renton

I replaced my water heater in March and skipped the drip pan to save $40. Last Tuesday the relief valve started leaking at 2 am and water spread across my basement before I woke up. I mopped it up fast but the laminate edges already swelled near the laundry room door. Has anyone else dealt with a slow leak ruining flooring, and did you find a moisture barrier that actually works under laminate?
