My neighbor in Billings said I was wasting money on a $90 permit, now I'm not so sure
Last month my neighbor Dale watched me frame out a small back deck and asked why I pulled a permit for it, saying he built his whole garage 6 years ago with no paperwork and nobody cared. Half of me thinks he's right, the fees and inspections just slow you down, but the other half keeps thinking about resale and what happens if an inspector drives by. I ended up getting the permit anyway and the whole thing cost me $90 plus two inspection visits. Where do you all land on this, is pulling permits for small projects just burning money or does it actually protect you?
Man, that $90 is nothing compared to what you'd pay if you ever tried to sell and the buyer's inspector flags unpermitted work, that can tank a deal or cost you way more to fix later. Dale got lucky nobody noticed, but luck isn't a plan.
