Used a cheap hair dryer on a stuck threaded PVC fitting and it spun right off
Had a 1 inch threaded PVC union on my pool pump line that would not budge no matter how hard I cranked it. I tried a strap wrench and even tapped it with a mallet, but the thing was glued shut from years of hard water. My neighbor Ray, who used to do pool work in Mesa, told me to hit it with a hair dryer for about 3 minutes on high heat. I figured he was messing with me but I dug out my wife's old Conair from under the sink and gave it a shot. Two minutes in I heard a little pop and it turned by hand like it was brand new. Turns out the heat makes the PVC expand just enough to break the calcium seal without cracking anything. Total cost was zero dollars and I saved myself from cutting the pipe out. Anyone else use heat on plumbing jobs like this, or am I late to the party?
