Unpopular opinion: that free wire shelving kit from the big box store almost cost me my whole pantry
Pulled the trigger on a 6 foot wire closet kit back in March because it was $79 and I figured how hard could it be. Mounted the top track into what I figured was a stud using the cheap plastic anchors they gave me, loaded it with cans, and woke up at 4am to a crash that sounded like a car hit the house. Turned out I hit drywall, not a stud, and 40 pounds of canned tomatoes came down on the tile. Now I probe every hole with a $12 magnetic stud finder and use 2.5 inch cabinet screws into real framing. Anyone else get burned by those plastic wall anchors that come in the box?
Forty pounds of canned tomatoes would've put a hole in my foot if I was standing there. My question is what made you trust the anchors in the box at all, because those little plastic sleeves are rated for maybe 15 pounds on a good day and a full pantry shelf blows past that fast. Did the kit even come with a stud finder or instructions telling you to hit framing, or did they just hand you drywall anchors and wish you luck?
