Took me 4 tries to get my pantry shelves right

Last month I kept trying to use MDF for pantry shelving because it's cheap and smooth. But after the third shelf sagged under canned goods I finally switched to 3/4 inch plywood. My neighbor Bill just shrugged and said 'told you so' when he saw me hauling the plywood into the garage. Has anyone else had to redo a project multiple times before figuring out the right material?

Did you use pressure treated plywood or just regular? Trying to figure out if that makes a difference for an outdoor project I got coming up.
