Tile vs vinyl plank in a mudroom, I'm torn after 3 years of regret

I laid cheap vinyl plank in my La Crosse mudroom 3 years ago and it's peeling at every seam, but my buddy swears tile cracks when the ground freezes and he's had two slabs break. Which one actually holds up long term, or should I just do poured epoxy and call it a day?

Take your buddy’s warning seriously because he’s RIGHT about tile up there. I’ve seen it happen too many times in Wisconsin, the freeze-thaw cycle will pop tiles right off the slab if there’s any moisture under them. But that cheap vinyl plank is also junk, so you’re not wrong to hate it. Poured epoxy is actually the smartest move here if you prep the floor right, because it flexes with the cold and has ZERO seams to peel. Just make sure you use a good moisture barrier underneath it or you’ll get bubbles in the spring. I’d skip tile entirely unless you’re willing to pay for a crack isolation membrane and heated slab, which at that point you’re overbuilding a mudroom. Epoxy with a non-slip additive is your best long term bet, it’ll outlast both those options and you can just hose it down.
