Rented a $40 floor sander for my living room, the rental guy was right about everything

I was sure my 1970s oak floors needed a professional crew, but after a neighbor in Akron convinced me to try the rental route, I spent last weekend on my knees with a cheap orbital sander. He told me to go slow with 36 grit first and I ignored him, now I'm patching two deep gouges where I let it sit too long. Anyone else find that the rental store advice is usually worth listening to, or was I just lucky?

Who actually reads rental instructions first time? Guilty.
