My basement ceiling fell in 3 weeks after a $60 moisture meter said dry

Last month I finally started finishing my basement in Columbus and got one of those cheap pin moisture meters from the hardware store. It read 12% on the joists so I slapped up drywall without thinking twice. Three weeks later a chunk of ceiling tape peeled off and water dripped right where I had hung it. Turns out pin meters miss dampness behind surfaces, I should have rented a proper hygrometer or at least touched the wood for cold spots. Has anyone else trusted a cheap meter and paid for it later?
