Caulking the tub in my Toledo apartment turned into a 3 day mess

Ripped out the old caulk with a putty knife and the whole back wall crumbled because it was drywall, not cement board. Do I just patch it with new drywall and recaulk, or is there a way to tell if there's more rot behind the tub before I waste more time?
