Just realized my smart speaker announced my medicine reminder in front of dinner guests. We've traded quiet dignity for convenience.

That "traded quiet dignity" line is a bit much. You can usually change the settings to keep those reminders private. It's not the tech, it's just a setup thing.

Oh totally, I turned all those alerts off the first day. The default settings are always way too chatty for my taste.

But what about people who don't know to look for those settings? My mom's phone buzzes all day with "you walked 500 steps!" She just thinks it's broken. The problem is tech that shouts at you by default. It assumes everyone wants a cheerleader, not quiet help.
