The 40,000 pesos I saved on that hammock versus a hostel bed in Medellin turned into a nasty case of mosquito bites and a thrown out back. Hammocks look romantic until you wake up at 4 AM with rain soaking through the tarp and no place to store your backpack safely. Hostels might be more expensive but they give you a solid roof, a real mattress, and a locker that actually locks.
