What about wasting your time with people you don't actually like? I found it better to be a bit more picky.

Totally get that fear of wasted evenings! What worked for me was giving every invite one coffee date. If the vibe's off, you can politely bow out after. That one hour test saved me from bigger time drains later.

@julia_ward makes sense about being picky, but my experience was the opposite. When I moved cities, saying yes to even weird invites led me to friends I never would have met otherwise. You might have a boring coffee now and then, but it's how you find your people. Being too careful too soon can keep you from stumbling into the best parts of a new place. A few dull evenings are worth it for the couple of real connections that change everything.
