Can we talk about how I finally stopped overpacking for trips?

I used to bring a huge suitcase everywhere, but after a month in Lisbon where I had to carry my bag up five flights of stairs, I switched to a 35L backpack. Has anyone else found a specific moment that forced you to pack lighter?

Read a blog post about a guy who packed for a two week trip in a single bag. He said the best trick is to lay everything out, then cut it in half. Sounds extreme, but that stair story proves he's onto something. Pain really does teach you what you actually need.

Carrying that bag up those stairs sounds like a nightmare. That kind of pain is the BEST teacher for minimalist packing.
