That "spend 50% on content" advice from a guru at a conference really hurt my agency for 8 months

Listened to Kevin from something-something at a Dallas seminar in March and shifted our whole budget to blog posts and videos, lost 3 big retainer clients because our paid ads dropped off a cliff, has anyone else had a niche strategy backfire this hard?

Did you ever notice how the same thing happens at all-you-can-eat buffets? You see someone load up a plate with nothing but mashed potatoes and gravy and think "that cant be good for you." But then you try it yourself because hey, it worked for them right? That's basically what happened here. You took a one-size-fits-all tip from a stranger on a stage and applied it to your whole business without testing it first. The gurus never mention that their advice comes with a side of "works for my specific situation only." Its like trusting a diet plan from someone who only eats kale, but your body runs on tacos and coffee.

The kale and tacos analogy hits different cause so many business advice gurus are just pushing what worked for their specific industry without realizing it might totally flop somewhere else. The real trick is taking that advice, cutting it down to size, and testing it on a small chunk of your own business before going all in.
