My line art looked like shaky spaghetti for 8 months, then a $15 screen protector fixed it
I draw on a cheap tablet I got used off a guy in Sacramento, and for the longest time my line art had this awful wobble to it. Every stroke came out bumpy no matter how slow I went, and I just assumed it was me, that my hands were bad. Last week I was digging through a drawer and found a matte screen protector I bought for like $15 back in December and never put on. I stuck it on, mostly because I wanted to cut down on glare. The next sketch I did, the lines came out smooth right away, like a totally different artist drew them. Turns out the bare glass was too slick, so the pen tip kept micro-slipping every time I moved it, and the matte surface gives it just enough grab to stay put. I went back and compared my old drawings to the new ones and it is honestly kind of funny how bad the before pile looks. Does anyone else here keep a screen protector on purely for the texture, or am I the last one to hear about this?
The slick glass thing is real and it goes further than most people think. I had the same problem and started keeping a log of my pen pressure and speed on different surfaces, and the numbers were wild. On bare glass my strokes averaged about 40 percent more wobble than on a matte sheet, even when I set the tablet to the same exact settings. What a lot of folks miss is that the fix is not just the protector by itself, it is the combo of the matte texture and a softer pen nib. Swapping to a felt tip along with the matte sheet cut my wobble down to almost nothing, way more than the protector alone did.
