Air dryer rebuild vs. buying new, the numbers surprised me

I put a new cartridge in my truck's air dryer back in March and it failed again last week. So I pulled the whole thing apart and rebuilt it with the kit, took about 2 hours total. That kit cost me $85 versus $280 for a reman unit from the parts house. The internals were mostly fine, just the purge valve and o-rings were shot. Has anyone else had luck with the rebuild kits on older Meritor units, or am I just lucky so far?

Damn, I used to think rebuild kits were just a way to waste an afternoon for parts that'd fail in a month, but your math definitely flipped me on that. Might have to stop throwing money at remans and try this myself next time.

That 2 hour job sounds about right for a Meritor, just gotta watch the torque on those valve housings or they'll leak air like a sieve. I've rebuilt two of em and both held up longer than the remans I used before.
