A senior engineer told me my pipelines were too clever

Had a code review last month where the lead said my CI/CD setup looked like a Rube Goldberg machine. I had stages spawning stages and using bash one-liners to parse JSON. He made me simplify it to three linear steps, even if it means a few extra minutes per deploy. Since then I haven't had a single mysterious build failure. Has anyone else gone backwards on complexity and seen better uptime?
