Pro tip: the 2-minute trick I use when I can't decide if a job is worth saying yes to
Two weeks ago I had three projects on the table and I froze up hard, just sat in the truck for 20 minutes going back and forth on all of them. So I started asking one dumb simple thing: would I rather do this or sit in traffic for an hour? Sounds silly but it cleared up two of the three right away. Last Tuesday I turned down a $400 job because of it and picked up a $150 one instead, and I felt fine about it. What's the weirdest rule you use to decide when your gut won't tell you anything?
Traffic math is weirdly good for this, something about knowing the time is gone no matter what makes it easier to compare. Mine is asking if I'd do it for half the money, and if the answer is still yeah then I actually wanted the work and not just the check. Turning down money sucks in the moment but that gut feeling after usually tells you if you got it right.
