My uncle in Ohio swore I would regret buying a 1998 Corolla with 210,000 miles on it
He said I would be dumping money into it within 6 months, and for the first couple years he was right. Then last March the alternator finally died at 268,000 miles and I paid $140 to fix it in my driveway. Now I see newer cars every day with payment book problems and I wonder if he ever admits he was wrong. What is the oldest car anyone here has kept running past 250,000?
Tbh your uncle wasn't even wrong, he was just early. You dropped 140 bucks on an alternator but you're not counting the years of small stuff that added up before that, belts, hoses, brakes, tires, all the normal wear stuff that hits harder on a car that old. And here's the part nobody wants to hear, that Corolla is one bad rear main seal or one rusted out brake line away from being scrap, and at 268k you're on borrowed time no matter how good it runs today. Newer cars have payments but they also have airbags that actually work, backup cameras, and they don't leave you stranded on the highway at 11pm in January. Ngl the real reason people brag about high mileage cars is because they got lucky, not because they made some smart money move.
