My uncle's advice about apologizing to kids was dead wrong until it was right

He always said never say sorry to a kid cause it makes you look weak, but after my nephew ignored me for 3 days over a broken LEGO set, I tried it and now he tells me everything, has anyone else had a stubborn parent rule flip on them?

My dad had the same rule, but one apology to my niece over a spilled soda changed everything between them. Kids don't see it as weakness, they see it as respect, and that's usually the whole battle.
