Rant: Picked the free 2FA app over the paid one, now I'm locked out of my own email

Last month I had to choose between Google Authenticator and a $30 a year paid 2FA app with cloud backup. I went free to save money, figured I'd just screenshot the codes. Phone died on Tuesday during a work trip to Austin, no backup codes saved, and now I'm waiting 48 hours for recovery access to my main account. Anyone else regret skipping the paid option just to save a few bucks?
