Showerthought: that "the customer is always right" thing is backwards and I watched it wreck a diner in Toledo
Three years ago I worked the counter at a diner off Reynolds Road in Toledo and the owner lived by that old saying, so when a guy complained his eggs were cold after he'd sat and talked for 40 minutes, we comped the whole $14 plate and gave him a free slice of pie. Everybody clapped on the inside about how classy we were, except the cook quit two weeks later and the place closed by spring. What people miss is that "the customer is always right" was a sales slogan from 1909, not some law of how to run a business, and bending over backwards for every loud person just teaches the good regulars that nobody here has a spine. So where do you all draw the line, do you eat the loss to keep the peace or do you tell the guy his eggs got cold because he talked for 40 minutes?
Feeling for you on this one, watching the cook walk out over cold eggs that were never the kitchen's fault has to sting. Tossing free pie at every loud table just tells the folks who actually show up every week that manners don't matter here.
