Wire rope birdcage on a 50 ton Grove, still debating if I should have stopped earlier

Last Tuesday I was lifting a precast panel near Portland and noticed the rope birdcaging about 20 feet from the drum. I kept going for two more lifts because the load chart said we had headroom, but the strands were way too loose. I finally stopped, cut the section, and re-reeved, which cost us three hours. Question is, do you call it on first sight or run it until the chart says no? I've had older hands tell me both ways, so I'm curious who else has been in that spot and what made you decide.
