Spent a Saturday at a hair show in Phoenix and learned a trick for sectioning long hair
I was at the AZ Hair Convention last month and watched this stylist demo a technique where she used thin elastic bands instead of clips to section off hair for a precision cut. She put tiny bands every 2 inches down the length. It kept everything perfectly straight and separated while she worked. I tried it on a client with waist-length hair last Tuesday and it cut my sectioning time by maybe 10 minutes. The elastic bands lay flat so you don't get bumps under the cut either. Has anyone else used hair ties for sectioning like this or am I late to the party?

Did the demo mention anything about how the bands affect tension during the cut? I tried this back in 2019 after a class at the Denver Hair Show and found the bands pulled the hair tighter than clips do, which changed the way the hair fell when I released it. I switched to using fabric-covered elastics (or the ones made for braiding) to get less grip on the hair, but I still prefer clips for the top sections where I need to see the fall more clearly.
