Had a client last Tuesday tell me my highlights were too 'chunky' - she showed me a pic from 2004 and said 'like this'

I was doing her foils and she kept saying she wanted 'that old look'. Turns out she meant those thick chunky highlights from the early 2000s. I had to explain that technique is super outdated and that modern balayage gives a way softer blend. She got kinda frustrated but I showed her some examples on my phone and she finally agreed to try a more natural placement. Now I always ask new clients to bring in at least 3 reference photos before I start sectioning. Has anyone else had to talk a client out of a trend that died 20 years ago?

Honestly I gotta push back a little on this one. I've been doing hair for about 12 years now and I've seen trends come back around more than once. Chunky highlights never really went away for everyone, they just went underground for a bit. Your client saw a specific look she liked and you spent more time talking her out of it than just giving her what she asked for. I mean sure, modern balayage is popular right now but who's to say chunky streaks won't be on magazine covers next year? The whole "that technique is super outdated" thing rubs me the wrong way. You could have done a modern take on chunky highlights instead of pushing her toward something she didn't want. Take this with a grain of salt but I think sometimes stylists get too caught up in what's trendy and forget the client might actually know what they want.
