Hit 30 jars of homemade pickles in 3 years and realized my grandma was right about store brands
I was cleaning out the pantry last weekend and counted 30 jars of pickles I've put up since I started canning back in 2021. My grandma used to say the cheap store brand cucumbers made better pickles than the fancy ones and I fought her on it for years. After 3 summers of side by side batches I finally tested it blind with my neighbor and we both picked the $1.29 jar over the $4.99 one. She passed in 2019 so I can't even tell her she won that argument. Anybody else got a snack hill they died on that turned out wrong?
There is actually a whole science thing here that nobody talks about. Cheap cukes are usually smaller and picked earlier, so they stay crunchier after sitting in brine. The fancy ones are bigger and older, so they go soft way faster. Your grandma was not just lucky, she had it all figured out without knowing why. The part that really gets me is that the expensive ones often come waxed too, and that wax stops the brine from soaking in the way it should. So the cheap jar wins on two counts and we all just assumed price meant better.
