Reading a spec sheet out loud caught a $14k mistake

Last week I was reviewing a subcontractor's proposal for a steel beam package on a warehouse job in Reno. I read the spec sheet out loud to my foreman, mostly to kill silence, and when I got to the flange thickness I paused. The sub had quoted W14x22 beams but the structural drawings clearly call for W14x38, a 73% difference in weight. He claimed it was a typo, but the price he gave only made sense if the lighter beam was never going to work. We caught it before ordering, but it made me wonder how many specs get skimmed instead of read. Now I make everyone on my team read critical dimensions back to each other, even if it feels dumb. Has anyone else had a vendor quote the wrong beam or rebar size and try to pass it off as a typo?
