One bad week with a laser layout tool made me question the whole idea of going paperless on site

Last month I had three straight days where my robotic total station kept losing its calibration on a commercial job in Reno. We fell behind by 6 hours trying to reset it every 40 minutes, but the old hands kept saying paper prints would've saved us. The tech says the sensor is fine and it was likely dust from all the cutting nearby, but now I'm torn between trusting the digital workflow and keeping a backup set of drawings in my truck. Anyone else had a full site stall out on a single piece of tech, or am I being too quick to blame the gadget?

Was the dust really the issue, or did the old hands just want an excuse to complain?
