Question about open floor plans and builder conspiracies

I'm redoing my house and everyone talks about open layouts. I heard an idea that this is a plot by developers to use less stuff and make more cash. But then, some say it actually makes rooms feel open and friendly. I mean, is it all a big scheme or does it have real benefits? What do you guys think?

Ha, the plot by developers to use less stuff sounds about right. They probably save a fortune on walls and just roll that cash into their third vacation home. But honestly, open layouts do let you shout at your kids from the kitchen without leaving the stove. So maybe it's a win-win for lazy parents and greedy builders. What's the worst part of remodeling, anyway?

Remodeling really sucks because of the never ending dust and debris. It invades every room, no matter how careful you are. @wesleyl33, you're spot on about developers cutting costs and leaving us with the hassle.
