Third customer this month wanted a laptop repair for free because they bought it at Best Buy
I've had 3 people walk into the shop in the last 4 weeks expecting me to fix their laptops for nothing just because the Geek Squad warranty ran out, and each one acted like I was robbing them when I quoted $85 for a diagnostic. What they don't get is the diagnostic alone eats up 45 minutes of bench time, and if I do 3 of those a day for free I'm out $255 before I even touch a screwdriver. How do you guys handle the free repair crowd without losing your cool or your margins?
Dealt with the exact same thing last week when a guy swore his MacBook just needed a quick look since he paid for AppleCare two years ago. Told him the free part ended when the plan did, and he stormed out like I kicked his dog. Stick to your price, because the second you cave for one person the whole town hears about it and suddenly everyone wants a free peek.
