That one client call that saved me from a total imaging disaster

Last Tuesday I was about to wipe a failing drive with a fresh Windows image when the client casually mentioned their old accounting software had been installed on that machine for 9 years with no backup, and I realized I'd been 5 minutes away from nuking 14 years of tax records, so has anyone else had a last-second warning like that or do we all just trust the ticket notes?

Froze when I read that part about 9 years with no backup. That's not a close call, that's a heart attack waiting to happen. I've had clients casually drop bombs like that right as I'm about to hit the go button, and it never gets less terrifying. Honestly, trust nothing in the ticket notes, half the time they're outdated or written by someone who never even looked at the machine. You dodged a bullet that would've ended careers, yours and probably theirs too.
