Old IT guy told me to just unplug the power supply before swapping RAM, I ignored him and fried a board
Back when I was starting out at a repair shop in Boise, this grizzled old tech kept saying to always yank the power cord and hold the power button for 10 seconds before touching anything. I figured it was overkill, so I just flipped the PSU switch off and went for it. Next thing I know, there's a tiny spark and the motherboard was dead. Cost me a $120 replacement out of my own pocket. Anyone else learned a basic safety tip the hard way like that?

Maybe the board was already messed up from something else and you just blamed the power thing. I mean, I've swapped RAM with the power cord still plugged in on half a dozen machines and nothing ever happened. Idk, seems like one of those urban legends old timers pass around to feel important. If the power supply is truly off and drained, there's no reason for a spark unless you're touching something wildly like the CPU socket.
