A customer told me their old laptop was 'just slow' but it had 17 browser toolbars installed

I was cleaning up a Dell Inspiron from 2015 for a regular client. They said it just needed a tune up, but the browser homepage was hijacked and the search bar was a mess. It took me about two hours to remove all the junkware and reset everything. I showed them the before and after, and they were shocked. How do you guys explain this kind of cleanup work to people who don't get it?

Hold on, maybe those toolbars were actually useful to them. For some people, having all those buttons right there is how they get to their favorite sites. Cleaning it all out might just confuse them and they'll end up reinstalling the same stuff next week.

Oh man, I actually feel for the customer here. Calling it "just slow" is their honest take, they don't see the toolbars as the problem, they see them as helpful buttons. My go-to is comparing it to a car's glove box stuffed full of old napkins and maps. The car still runs, but it's a mess and hard to find anything. Cleaning it out makes everything work like it should again. It's not a magic fix, it's just taking out the trash they didn't realize was piling up.
